‘Tammy’ Trailer: Melissa McCarthy Is a Fugitive From Justice
Melissa McCarthy is back, but not with her 'Bridesmaids,' 'The Heat' and 'Spy' director Paul Feig, surprisingly. Warner Bros. unveiled the new 'Tammy' trailer on 'Good Morning America' Tuesday morning, previewing the comedy queen's next wave of shenanigans under the direction of her real-life husband Ben Falcone.
'Tammy' sees McCarthy taking on a down-on-her-luck (and down-on-her-hygiene) character who robs a fast-food restaurant and goes on the run from the law, though not without her fair share of hijinks along the way. In all honestly, the 'Tammy' trailer doesn't do much to pique our interest; in fact, it almost snuffs it all out. We've seen this same song and dance before with 'Identity Thief' -- just because Melissa McCarthy stars in a movie does not mean it'll be funny. Also, who would believe Susan Sarandon would be McCarthy's onscreen grandma? And what is Kathy Bates doing in this movie?
We're willing to let most of these issues slide for the moment, given that this is Falcone's first time in the directorial driver's seat. He appeared alongside his wife in 'Bridesmaids,' 'Identity Thief' and 'The Heat' (and will be making an appearance in 'Tammy,' as well), so the man knows comedy. Also worth noting is that he co-wrote the screenplay with McCarthy, so perhaps the above footage is not a proper representation.
'Tammy' will hit theaters July 2, and we're hoping to see something more that'll sway our outlook.
