You’d think a 250-year celebration would draw a crowd, right? But this year’s Army birthday parade was surprisingly quiet.

This Saturday is the 250th anniversary of the United States Army being established. Several army bases throughout the country have big events planned, but sadly the one for Lawton will be no longer happening.

In the heart of Fort Bliss, a unique institution is training the next generation of Army leaders amid the desert's rugged beauty.

In the mid-1800s, the U.S. Army experimented with using camels to haul supplies across Texas and the American Southwest. The Camel Corps was a bold solution to harsh terrain and long distances, but despite initial success, the project was abandoned after just a decade.

Neither Fort Bliss or Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson were involved in using Basic Allowance for Subsistence, (BAS), money meant for soldiers meals on other things. Other bases around the country were allegedly sending over half of all the money collected from United States soldiers paychecks elsewhere.

Today, the majority of major retailers, restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues, and transportation services offer some form of military or first responders discount.
