Service Medals Finally Returned to Family of Fallen Veteran
After 74 years, service medals including the Purple Heart have finally been returned to the family of a fallen Lubbock veteran.
James Dillon Adkison was a sailor aboard the USS Arizona the day it was infamously attacked at Pearl Harbor. That was 1941. Now at long last the medals he was posthumously awarded have returned to the hands of his family, who currently resides in Arkansas.
The medals were awarded to Adkison in 1943, and spent an unknown amount of time in the possession of a thief before they were dropped and re-discovered by police in the year 2000.
In May 2015, police asked the public for assistance in tracking down relatives, which lead them to Searcy, Arkansas and a women named Martha Black. Befittingly, it was confirmed on Memorial Day by police that Black is Adkison's niece and the rightful owner of the medals.
It may have taken 74 years, but it's safe to say the medals have reached their final destination, enshrined and on display in the home of a thankful James Dillon Adkison's family.
