It seems like not a day goes by where we don’t hear about another scam or scheme hitting the Hub City area. This time around, we have two more scams that you need to know about.

  1. The utility company scam – On Tuesday, a couple reported that an individual claiming to be with a local utility entered a local residence claiming he was trying to locate a gas leak. That isn’t what he was there for. The individual allegedly assaulted the residents, then fled. Why was he there? Theft? Who really knows. (The individual wanted for questioning is a bald, black male with a heavy build around 5’11”. If you have any information on this person call Lubbock Crime Line at 741-1000.)
  2. The ‘you've got a warrant’ scam – Over the last week, an individual posing as a sheriff’s deputy has been calling residents informing them that they have a warrant. Of course, the individual will clear said warrant upon the payment of fees with a pre-paid card. According to the Lubbock Sheriff’s Office, real officers will not call you about a warrant; they will just show up.

What have we learned from these situations?

First, if you are not sure of who someone is at your door, don’t let them in. Ask for a supervisor’s name, then call the company to verify. Or simply call the police if they seem suspicious.

Secondly, if someone calls you on the phone demanding any form of payment, just hang up. It's that simple. Don’t become a victim, be on the defensive and be proactive so you can avoid these types of situations.
