Patrick Mahomes Inducted to the Ring of Honor During Halftime Ceremony
Patrick Mahomes is the biggest star in the NFL and the only quarterback in the NFL to play in the last four AFC Championship games, winning two of those. He's an NFL MVP. He's a Super Bowl MVP. He's a Red Raider.
Mahomes wasn't on teams that won a bunch of games at Texas Tech, but his offenses were some of the most prolific in school history. He took over late in 2014 against Oklahoma State and on his first play he fumbled the snap and threw an interception. It was all up from there.
In 2015, Texas Tech's offense was incredible. Jakeem Grant and DeAndre Washington were electric with Jonathan Giles, Keke Coutee, and Devin Lauderdale all adding their own touches to the totals. The Red Raiders averaged more than 43 points per game and made a bowl game against a really good LSU Team. 2016 wasn't as good for the Red Raiders as a team, but Mahomes showed out again leading the offense to another great output, but the team missed a bowl game.
After that season, Mahomes left for the NFL draft and went in the top 10 on the merits of what he was able to do as a Red Raider. Mahomes went to the perfect fit with Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs with Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. The rookie quarterback got to sit on the bench for a season in 2017 while being mentored by Alex Smith but the future was always apparent for Andy Reid.
As a rookie, Mahomes burst onto the scene in a game against the Broncos showing the world he was QB1 material. The team made the move that offseason and gave Mahomes the keys to the kingdom in 2018. He dominated and won league MVP but fell to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game in an overtime game that ended without Mahomes getting a chance after regulation. Mahomes and the Chiefs would win the Super Bowl the following season.
Great in college and great in the NFL. He was the first Big 12 quarterback to win an NFL playoff game, and the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards after doing the same in college.
In a lot of ways, Mahomes is a Texas Tech Hall of Famer for what he's accomplished since he left, but not just on the field. He's been an incredible ambassador for the Red Raiders coming back to basketball games, traveling to NCAA Tournament games, coming back to other events when he can, and inking a marketing deal with Arrowhead Stadium and Texas Tech University.
I don't know of another quarterback who can look up and see his college advertised all over his NFL stadium that's not even in the same state as the University. Pretty amazing.
Mahomes was honored at halftime by Texas Tech when they dropped the curtain covering his name on the side of the stadium beside the other Red Raiders' legends in the Ring of Honor. They also played a tribute video during the presentation.
