The new "Star Trek" game is based on the JJ Abramsmovies, with a storyline that takes place between the events of his 2009 film and this year's sequel. The plot of the game will also be considered part of the official canon for the new Trek universe.

It starts with Vulcan scientists trying to create a new home world, but the device they build to speed up the process accidentally opens a rift in space above New Vulcan. And the aliens that travel through the rift attack them and steal the rift-making device.

The enemy is a re-imagined version of the Gorn, which many of you remember from the classic TV series. But these are a lot more reptilian than the thing Shatner fought. In fact they've created over FIFTEEN different kinds of Gorn including enormously powerful brutes, small vicious rushers, and a class with the ability to turn invisible.

The game itself is a co-op shooter that features Kirk and Spock as playable characters. Kirk's a "run-and-gunner" with hisphaser, while Spock uses stealth abilities like a quieter weapon that freezes enemies, as well as his Vulcan nerve pinch.

The movie cast recorded their game voices from all over the world. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto did Kirk and Spock from San Francisco and L.A., while Karl Urban and Simon Pegg did McCoy and Scotty from New Zealand and London, respectively. And because the movie studio wanted this to be the most authentic "Star Trek" game ever created, the ship design and sound effects are all the same as the film. And the guy who did the movie's soundtrack also wrote the music for this game.

The "Star Trek" game is Rated T for Teen and it hits stores today for the Xbox360 and PS3 consoles, and in a PC version too.
