October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month, a time where dog lovers around the country aim to decrease stigma, educate, and stop all of the misinformation surrounding this breed.

As a pittie owner myself and someone who grew up with the breed, they truly are some of the best dogs out there, but are incredibly misunderstood. They've been mistreated and misused as fighting dogs, creating a false narrative of aggression and poor behavior. The truth is that pit bulls are incredibly loyal and intelligent dogs, making them easy to train -- and easy to abuse by using their loyalty and trainability against them.

They're incredibly loving dogs that are actually extremely well-tempered. According to the American Temperament Test Society, Inc., the American Staffordshire Terrier (AKA pit bull) passes their temperament tests 85.5 percent of the time. That's a better rate than than Collies, Shepherds, Corgis, Beagles, and many other popular dog breeds.

There are also a slew of other misconceptions about pit bulls, such as lock jaw and them having a 1,600-pound per square inch bite. In reality, they don't have lock jaw and have a 235-pound per square inch bite, which is the average bite force for medium to large-sized dog, and less than Bulldogs and Mastiffs, which range between 305 and 552 psi.

Due to the stigma surrounding pit bulls, there's much more responsibility involved with owning the breed. Just like any dog, you should train them and ensure good behavior around people and other dogs. Unfortunately, if a pit bull shows any bad behavior, it can cost them their lives, unlike a breed like a golden retriever or lab, which can get away with much more due to their positive reputation.

So if you're looking to adopt, I highly suggest you consider getting a pittie. Just understand that there are plenty of people out there that will judge you and your dog before they even get to know them.
