Mackenzie Middle School Reports Racially Offensive Use of School Logo to Parents
Parents of students enrolled at Mackenzie Middle School in Lubbock, Texas were notified by Principal, Dr. John Martinez, of a social media account that was inappropriately using the school's logo in a manner offensive to students of color.
The Instagram account with the image has been flagged for removal by the school, and they are currently looking for information regarding those responsible for the images.
Here's the full email sent by Mackenzie Middle School Principal Dr. John Martinez to parents received in regard to what occurred:
"Dear Mackenzie Middle School families,
Campus administration was notified this morning of a social media account inappropriately using our campus logo. The offensive nature of the account appears to target students of color.
We have reported the account to Instagram for removal as a violation of their community guidelines. Additionally, we will continue our investigation to identify the originator of the account. Please call us at 806-219-4200 if you or your child has any information. The responsible parties are subject to disciplinary action according to our student code of conduct and district policy.
Lubbock ISD and Mackenzie Middle School are committed to providing a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for all students and denounce all forms of discrimination. Actions or behaviors directed at intimidating or harassing any members of our school community have no place in Lubbock ISD and will not be tolerated."
This is sadly not the first time this year that a Lubbock school has had problems with racial targeting and bullying on social media. If you have any information leading to who is responsible for this, please contact the school immediately.
