On the Monday edition of The Chad Hasty Show on KFYO, Lubbock County Sheriff Kelly Rowe joined the show to talk about crime and drug activity in the Lubbock Area, how it is tied to Mexican drug cartels and what is being done to address the problem.

Sheriff Rowe explained the large increase in drug related activity in Lubbock county, and how the porous nature of the U.S.-Mexican border is contributing to the situation. Rowe said more tools and funding are needed from the county to fight the growing problem. However, that's something Rowe doesn't see happening.

"I, unfortunately, just don't see a light at the end of the tunnel," Rowe said.

"As long as that border is going to stay porous, as long as we've got a lot of political decisions being made with regard to immigration, and we're dismissing the criminal side of that equation, I have no question there's a lot of folks trying to find a better life in the United States, and trying to come in, I know that's a part of it," said Rowe. "But unfortunately, when you see a major player like we saw last summer, who just because he didn't have any history in the U.S., but turns out to be a heavy hitter, and who had been a heavy hitter in Mexico, who would have been eligible for the current amnesty program that's out there, you know that makes you scratch your head."

"This guy, like I said, this guy was at the level that we ultimately confirmed that he was an assassin involved in beheadings and everything else," said Rowe.

On the issue of drugs, the porous border, and immigration, Rowe shared what he believes are the priorities.

"We really need to shake the politics loose on this, out of it a little bit, let's look at the real issues that are going on, not just in Lubbock, but nationally," said Rowe.
