Most of us woke up this morning and cranked our heaters on full blast. Some may have even called into work and opted to snuggle in bed instead of braving the polar temperatures. Insanely cold weather is on the radar for Lubbock for the next few days and as I write this article, it's 8:30 am and only a meager 6 degrees in The Hub City. Cold weather isn't really our forte and some Texans are experiencing flashbacks to the horrific ERCOT disaster of 2021.

The next couple of days are going to be a doozy, and if you've been feeling a bit nervous about the power grid holding up, you are not alone. We haven't forgotten about the absolute mayhem Texans faced in February of 2021 when the power grid failed miserably, leaving millions of people freezing and with very few options to stay warm. Hundreds died as a result of the failure.

Unfortunately, the disaster could have been prevented if we had agreed to winterize our power plants. We thought we knew better than Mother Nature and we were very, very wrong.

So, are we prepared this time?

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas as well as the Public Utility Council seem optimistic and have assured Texans that we are much more prepared for winter weather this year. They do not foresee the power grid failing, but then again, it doesn't really feel like we were warned last time. ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas was quoted in a recent article with the Texas Tribune as saying, "We do expect to have sufficient generation supply to meet the forecasted demands."

Let's all hope they mean what they say and have taken the necessary steps to keep Texans safe this year. Make sure to keep warm blankets and emergency supplies in your vehicle in the event you come across some car trouble. You can find a handy list of what items to toss in your for winter weather emergencies here.

Stay warm, and I'll catch you next year. I'm off to hibernate for a while.
