Lubbock Man Suffers Brain Injury, Memory Loss After Being Beaten During Robbery
The night of Wednesday, January 19th, 20-year-old Pernell Upshaw, Jr. was robbed at gunpoint before being beaten unconscious.
Upshaw posted to Facebook that he was robbed "for all my money, credit cards, cell phones, car/house/store keys, and identification outside my apartment door." He says that he's suffering from a traumatic brain injury and memory loss, causing him to withdraw from Texas Tech University for the semester and put his business on hold.
KAMC News spoke with Upshaw's mother, Miranda Richard, who said that his injuries were so bad that he didn't know what year it was when he was being transported to the hospital.
This is apparently the second time in a month that Upshaw's been targeted. He says that a few weeks before this incident, he was robbed at the same location outside his apartment. He said that the suspect(s) took his PlayStation 5 video game console and some of his shoes. Upshaw believes the same person is responsible for both robberies.
Upshaw said the following in his Facebook post:
I don’t think it is fair that I have to put my life on hold. All I want to do is take care of my family, be an example, & give back to my community. That’s why I chose to stay here in my hometown instead of leaving. Im a very giving and genuine person, but I guess no matter how much love you show people will still find a way to envy you.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for people to donate to Upshaw since he's unable to pay bills with his sneaker business on hold. You can click the link here if you wish to donate.
Lubbock Police have not provided any updates on arrests or possible suspects as of Tuesday, January 25th, 2022.
