Lubbock Man Admits to Pepper Spraying and Strangling His Mother

On Monday, September 27th, 43-year-old James Taggart Patterson of Lubbock pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

KAMC News reports that back in May 2019, officers responded to the 2000 block of 58th Street and found Patterson's mother, who explained to officers how her son attempted to kill her.

The mother said that it began when Patterson was cooking a can of beans and she told him to not eat all of the food in the house. At this point, Patterson began yelling at her and eventually pepper sprayed her in the face before throwing her to the floor. There, it's said that he wrapped a rope around her neck and threatened to kill her.

The mother was able to break free before being thrown to the floor again and punched multiple times.

At some point, Patterson stopped, reportedly saying things like "I'm not going to kill you. I was going to." He then got into the shower, and that's when the mother left the house and called police. When officers arrived at the scene, they noted that the mother's eyes were bruised and her neck had a mark consistent with being strangled.

Patterson wouldn't be arrested until around a week after the assault when he broke into his mother's house.

He has been sentenced to five years in state prison, but he has more than two years of jail credit that can be deducted from his sentence.
