A member of the Atheist Group of Lubbock has requested to offer the invocation prior to an upcoming City Council meeting.

KAMC News reports the PR director for the local atheist group said they are already on the schedule for January.

A pastor in the city stated that while people are allowed to believe what they want, they are not doing what an invocation actually is because an invocation is asking for the presence of a deity and atheists don’t have a deity.

Mayor Dan Pope released a statement saying;

A member of the Lubbock Atheist Community has requested to offer the invocation prior to an upcoming City Council meeting. We are evaluating this request and our existing policy regarding selection of who provides the invocation to open our council meetings.
