Jared Leto has some enormous shoes to fill as the Joker, last portrayed by Heath Ledger in a performance that earned him a posthumous Oscar. And it looks like Leto took some inspiration from the late actor, who was known for his devotion to the role -- method acting and all.

“He did some bad things, Jared Leto,” explained fellow Suicide Squad actor Viola Davis during an interview with Vanity Fair. “He gave some really horrific gifts. He had a henchman who would come into the rehearsal room, and the henchman came in with a dead pig and plopped it on the table, and then he walked out. And that was our introduction into Jared leto.”

She continued, saying that while it was a frightening moment, it also inspired her performance.

“Now I’m terrified as a person thinking, ‘Is he crazy?’ but the second part was, ‘Oh sh—t! I got to have my stuff together,’” she said. “You talk about commitment. And then he sends Margot Robbie a black rat. It was still alive in a box. She screamed, and then she kept it.”

Davis isn’t the first cast member to comment on Leto’s method acting. Will Smith, who plays Deadshot in the upcoming movie, insists he’s never met the real Jared Leto.

“I’ve never actually met Jared Leto. We worked together for six months and we’ve never exchanged a word out of ‘Action!’ and ‘Cut!. We’ve never said, ‘Hello,’ we’ve never said, ‘Good day,’” said Smith during an interview with Zane Lowe. “I’ve only ever spoken to him as Deadshot and him as the Joker. I literally have not met him yet.”

Still, though, Smith says he’s “looking forward to meeting him.”
