Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto has pretty much fully transitioned from actor to singer. But to commemorate the 17th anniversary of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain’s death — who shot himself on April 5, 1994 — Leto fused both of his skill sets, posting a video of himself dressed up as Cobain and singing his songs.
Leto, whose acting resume is littered with impressive credits like ‘My So-Called Life’ and ‘Fight Club,’ makes for an eerie Cobain doppelganger, from the thrift store gray cardigan, flannel shirt, messy hair and shades. He also employs the same gruff, gravelly voice that encapsulates Cobain’s hallmark sound — as he sings bits of Nirvana staples like ‘Pennyroyal Tea’ and ‘Rape Me.’

Before Cobain’s widow Courtney Love and Nirvana-philes go calling for Leto’s head, the vocalist took a moment to explain why he chose to post this previously recorded video and why he was moved to impersonate Cobain and share it with the world.

“I heard today was the day Kurt passed away 17 years ago. Can’t believe it’s been that long,” he writes. “So grateful for his contribution and inspiration. Not sure I’d be doing this if it weren’t for him. He gave us all permission to create no matter what our skill set and reminded me that dreams are possible. Thanks for that.”

Leto adds: “This made me recall a short piece of film I shot when I heard they were making a film celebrating his life. I made it to explore the character and explore creative possibilities. I never sent it to the studio or to anyone but thought I’d share it now …”
