If you have no, or really crappy, A/C; your first thought may be to open up windows. Don't. That is actually letting more heat in. Keep 'em closed and use the "Caveman Method". Just turn your home into a modern day cave.

What's The Caveman Method?

It's so simple that, as GEICO likes to say, even a caveman can do it. Caves stay cooler during heat waves because the rock walls shield it from sunlight. Covering all your windows kinda does the same thing and turning off the lights helps too. That keeps warm air from entering your home while killing the lights eliminates the heat they generate.

Blinds and curtains cover windows ok but if you really want to go big, you can either tint your windows and/or install "integral blinds". These work on existing doors and windows and are said to last a lot longer than typical external blinds do. Outdoor shades can help too, especially to cover large window areas or portions of the house that get extra hot due to direct sunlight.
