John Oliver Just Targeted One of Texas’ Biggest Obsessions

Texas has a few things that people don't mess with, and Buc-ee's is definitely one of them. Mention the famous beaver, and before long someone will be telling you about the spotless bathrooms, the brisket sandwiches or the Beaver Nuggets.

That's why I couldn't help but laugh when comedian John Oliver decided to spend part of his HBO show taking shots at one of Texas' most beloved brands. Of all the things he could've picked a fight with, he chose Buc-ee's.

Why John Oliver Targeted Buc-ee’s

During a recent episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver criticized Buc-ee's history of filing trademark lawsuits against businesses it believes copied its famous branding.

Then, because this is John Oliver, he took things a step further by unveiling a parody convenience store called "Buc-Off," complete with fake merchandise, a squirrel mascot named Mr. Nutterbutter and an open invitation for Buc-ee's to sue him.

Whether you agree with him or not, you've got to admit it's a pretty funny way to make a point.

My El Paso Take on the Buc-ee’s Drama

Here's where I may lose some fellow Texans.

I live in El Paso, where we still don't have a Buc-ee's. So while the rest of Texas is passionately defending the beaver, I'm over here laughing at the whole thing.

Not because I have strong feelings about trademark law, but because it's easier to side with John Oliver when the nearest Buc-ee's is hours away. Call it jealousy if you want. I'll own it.

I have to admit, watching him poke fun at one of Texas' biggest icons has been entertaining, even if I know plenty of Texans would disagree with me.

Why Buc-ee’s Fans Aren’t Going Anywhere

None of this is likely to change how Texans feel about Buc-ee's.

If anything, John Oliver's segment probably reminded people just how protective they are of the famous beaver. For every viewer laughing along with his parody, there were plenty of Texans ready to defend the clean bathrooms, the Beaver Nuggets and everything else that has turned Buc-ee's into a roadside legend.

As for me? I still think the parody is hilarious, and yes, I'm probably only saying that because El Paso still doesn't have a Buc-ee's. The day that changes, though...don't be surprised if this article mysteriously disappears!
