Kelsey From Troy Takes Times Square By Storm With Her Smile
In the next few months, millions of visitors walking through Times Square will see the smile of a young girl from Troy, Texas. Eight-year-old Kelsey Killen has been selected by the National Down Syndrome Society to represent its message of inclusiveness on one of the world's largest displays.
A Bumpy Journey
Kelsey has already hit many bumps on her journey. She was born prematurely, born with heart complications, and has been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis that affects her lungs. Atlanta, Texas, which is outside of Dallas, always had a bright star shining boldly in its heavens; it was Kelsey.
Miss Sassy Pants
Kelsey’s mother, Meghan, recalls the intense fear that washed over her the moment Kelsey’s doctor broke the news that Kelsey had Down syndrome. But rather than limitations, the family has concentrated on Kelsey’s feisty demeanor. She is sometimes called Miss Sassy Pants and had a social media presence named after her personality; she had become an overnight sensation dubbed Miss DipsyDoodle with her fiery attitude and infectious dimpled smile.
Raising Awareness
Meghan believes that Kelsey has broadened conversations about Down syndrome, and social media has provided the opportunity to raise awareness. Meghan enjoys it the most when little kids are genuinely curious and want to know why Kelsey is different, for those moments provides an opportunity to educate how everyone deserves acceptance and love. Kelsey never forgets to mention how much she loves the Down syndrome community for embracing them along her journey.
A Celebration of Life and Pride, Around the World
Meghan knew one day she would submit Kelsey’s picture to the National Down Syndrome Society’s annual video display in Times Square. Kelsey’s photo was one of 2,600 submitted to the National Down Syndrome Society to represent Down syndrome and her family’s story. The display will include up to 500 individuals of all ages with Down syndrome that includes personal life experiences and accomplishments.
As Kelsey’s greatest supporters, Kelsey’s family believes her story sends the message to the world that every child's journey is unique and Kelsey's journey is extraordinary.
