Will Texans Be Forced To Give Up Their Gas Stoves?
The next big fight in Washington, D.C. could be about one of your favorite kitchen appliance. The US Consumer Product Safety Commissioner in an interview with Bloomberg, said that using gas stoves can be a "hidden hazard".
That could mean a ban of gas stoves in the future across the United States. According to CNN, the federal agency is considering a ban on gas stoves that it considers a source of indoor pollution that has been linked to childhood asthma.
A December 2022 study in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that indoor gas stove usage is associated with an increased risk of current asthma among children. The study found that almost 13% of current childhood asthma in the US is attributable to gas stove use.
Trumka told Bloomberg the agency plans to open public comment on gas stove hazards. Options besides a ban include “setting standards on emissions from the appliances.”
I don't know about you, but everyone I know who has a gas stove loves cooking on it and will probably say no to getting rid of it. According to CNN, 35% of homes in the U.S. use a gas stove. That number climbs to 70% of homes in California and New Jersey.
So just wait and see how the battle for your kitchen stove turns out. If I had to guess, a lot of people are not going to let this one. Senator Ted Cruz put it this way on twitter yesterday:
Come and Take It!
