Ultimate Texas Tech Campus Guide For Incoming Freshmen

As we get ready to enter another school year, it's important that any incoming freshman knows that Texas Tech University's Lubbock campus is huge. I'm talking over 1,830 acres. As friendly as West Texans are, it's still crucial that safety remains the number-one concern when walking around.

TTU Campus Safety Tips

I don't care who you are or how scary you look, walking alone at night is never a good idea. Always stick to well-lit or populated areas when the sun goes down, and if you can, travel with friends whenever possible.

Always lock your dorm room and your vehicle behind you, and familiarize yourself with the map of blue light emergency phones scattered throughout campus.

Stay Safe When Driving

I really shouldn't have to say this, but never drink and drive. If you decide to go out with some friends, make sure the group designates a driver who will stay sober. When in doubt, just Uber it out.

Make sure you always wear your seatbelt, and PLEASE be aware of the speed limits. I can't tell you how many times I saw students get pulled over for going just a few miles over the limit during my time on campus.

Unless otherwise posted, these are the speed limits on the TTU campus:

Campus streets - 20 mph
Parking lots - 10 mph
Parking garages - 5 mph

Football game days are PACKED. So, plan your trips accordingly to avoid getting trapped in game-day traffic.

Finally, you should always keep your phone charged and NEVER leave your dorm for a night out without telling someone you trust where you're going. Also, don't be silly and accept drinks from strangers, no matter how dreamy their eyes are.
