No matter what age, you can't deny the subtle joy you get from seeing the decorations and all the little Spider-mans and Wednesday Addamses scurrying about. Unfortunately, we don't always live in safe times and there are threats all around us, even on holidays.

Luckily for us, Texas DPS is out there watching our backs. They even shared some safety tips for parents and trick-or-treaters alike who are out enjoying the spooky Halloween air.

Safety Tips for Drivers on Halloween

Texas DPS urges all adults to not drink and drive on Halloween... Hopefully, that's a given, but you never know. They also ask that, if you are going to drive a vehicle on Halloween, you stay aware, buckle up, and slow down to reduce risk of hurting children running in the road.

My favorite safety tip is just simply: "Drive defensively". I love the image in my mind of someone hunched over the steering wheel driving two miles an hour with eyes wide open like a gremlin coasting down roads. But hey, you gotta take all precautions when children's safety is at risk.

Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treating on Halloween

Texas DPS also included tips for children to avoid further risks while going door to door asking for candy from strangers.

They urge that all costumes remain bright or reflective in some way to alert drivers of their presence. Also, face masks are not advised as they can restrict vision on streets and sidewalks. Face paint is preferable in these instances.

Traveling with adults is paramount when trick-or-treating and, if children do get split from parents, make sure there is a prearranged meetup location that you can circle back to.

Children should only approach well-lit houses and they should NEVER enter a home or vehicle for candy.

Speaking of candy, it's also advised that kids do not eat any of their haul before coming back home and having an adult inspect each piece.

Lastly, make sure you are aware of your neighborhood and where some spots are to avoid while trick-or-treating.
