Who has two thumbs and wants to ruin your appetite today? This guy! According to a health advisory from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Texans are urged to spot the symptoms of an illness caused by a parasite that causes severe diarrhea and vomiting. Believe me, you'll know if you exhibit any of these symptoms.

The Poo-Poo Parasite in Texas

All jokes aside, the statewide warning is regarding the intestinal illness called Cyclosporiasis which is caused by—you guessed it—the Cyclospora parasite.

These microscopic parasites get ingested and passed into the intestines when someone eats infected foods. It's believed that drinking untreated water, like rivers and lakes, as well as eating fresh produce that was fertilized with contaminated feces can lead to these parasites latching onto the small intestines.

They can even survive for a long time in pools treated with chlorine.

What Are the Symptoms of Cyclosporiasis?

Here's where things get absolutely wild. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the "main symptom is loud, watery (explosive) diarrhea." Sorry to be graphic, but now you know that perhaps the late night visit to Taco Bell wasn't the reason behind your potty troubles.

Other common symptoms of Cyclosporiasis include the following:

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal Cramps
  • Weight Loss
  • Fatigue

How to Get Tested

DSHS recommends that anyone who exhibits symptoms of Cyclosporiasis should talk to their medical provider and submit stool samples for testing. Unfortunately, one negative test is not enough to rule out a parasitic presence. Three stool samples taken at least 24 hours apart is the ideal way to test.

An easy way for Texans to prevent hosting the Cyclospora parasite is by washing hands vigorously with soapy water before and after handling fresh fruits and vegetables and by cleaning all cutting boards and utensils used immediately after.

But hey, the upside to all of this? At least this illness can't be spread through person-to-person contact. Just don't go touching other people's feces. I really feel like I don't need to mention that part.
