We all love our pets in Texas and if you know me, you know I'm a big dog guy. And many of you are as well. Just look at the pet-related industry to see how much we love our dogs and are willing to spend on them. There are dog boutiques, daycares, specialized foods, cakes, even cards "signed" by you dog. And that doesn't even count dog friendly patios and clothing for dogs.

And of course we can't forget about Halloween costumes for dogs.

And sometimes when we are looking to add a four-legged friend to our family and bring home a new puppy, we look to see what the most popular breeds are. The website hepper.com has put together a list of the most popular dog breeds in Texas. Some may surprise you. But they all seem like they are great dogs.

As much as we love our dogs in Texas, not as many people as you would think are fans of dogs. Texas apparently ranks 28th in dogs ownership compared to the other states.

5. Yorkshire Terrier

I have to say, this one surprised me. But apparently it's due to the history of the dog and the immigrants who made their way to Texas long ago. According to Hepper.com, they were brought over by immigrants working in mills and the breed was excellent at catching rats.

4. Labrador Retriever

A classic choice. Another popular dog in Texas and the entire United States is the Labrador Retriever. These dogs have warmed the hearts of the entire country and are the most loved dog in America. They have beautiful coats of Black, chocolate, silver, or golden and are friendly and active companions. They are often used as hunting and service dogs, but they don’t always have to be working to make a good pet. Who doesn't love a lab?

Another one the surprised me, but they are have been a trendy for a while now.

A Texas classic. Do you know what the official state dog breed is for Texas? Now you do. It's the Blue Lacy. According to Hepper.com, the breed was developed in the 1800's to help with herding, hunting, and ranch work. They are very smart and kind dogs that come with a ton of energy. You really need a backyard for one of these dogs.
