Sorry, college students, but you'll have to do better this school year as Lubbock bars are buckling down on more stringent fake ID spotting behaviors.

New Training to Spot Fake IDs

This year, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) sent out updated training programs for businesses selling alcohol.

These programs are meant to educate businesses in ways of identifying whether the ID they were given is authentic or not.

What Happens When You Get Caught With a Fake ID in TX?

In Texas, if you are caught trying to pass a fake ID off as a real one, you are subject to a range of consequences. These can vary from fines and community service to criminal charges and expulsion from your university.

It also depends on HOW you lied about your identity. If you just lie to a bouncer that you are over 21, that can constitute a hefty fine.

This also goes for having a fake driver's license. Just a misdemeanor, but if you attend a university, they may have other policies that could add some extra baggage on top of your fine.

If you have a fake or altered government record on you, then you opened Pandora's Box... This can lead to felony charges and up to 10 years in prison.

Who Else Gets In Trouble For Fake IDs?

Remember: using fake IDs is not a victimless crime. Say you go to a bar with some friends, but--uh-oh--you're under 21. No biggie, you've got your nifty fake ID on you.

If the bartender doesn't catch that your ID is fake, you've now just dragged this business in to your legal situation-ship. If it's proven that they failed to identify a fake ID from a minor, they can risk losing their liquor license and their employees could face separate charges.
