ERCOT Appeals To Texans To Conserve Energy
On Friday, the CEO of ERCOT told the press that they expected everything to be normal and that there was no expectation of an energy emergency. As of Sunday at 6:00pm, conditions on the ground have changed that point of view.
ERCOT officials are now asking Texans to conserve energy on Monday morning between 6:00am and 10:00am. This is also the time when temperatures and wind chills are supposed to be at their coldest during the arctic cold front Texas is currently experiencing. So why the need to conserve energy?
According to a press release from ERCOT,
Due to continued freezing temperatures, very high demand, and unseasonably low wind, operating reserves are expected to be low during the morning hours of Monday, January 15, prior to the solar ramp up. As a result, ERCOT is asking Texans to conserve electricity use, if safe to do so, Monday, January 15, from 6 a.m. – 10 a.m. CT. ERCOT is expecting similar conditions on Tuesday, January 16, and will continue to closely monitor conditions and keep the public informed through our communication channels.
ERCOT did say they are not experiencing emergency conditions right now. ERCOT also noted that if citizens are dealing with power outages, those outages are local in nature and not because of the grid.
