As we begin to look ahead to the winter months, many Texans will be considering vacation plans. While many will stay in the United States and even travel to different parts of Texas, others may seek to travel to a different destination, maybe somewhere international.

But there are some places that you would be wise to avoid. When planning a vacation it is always a smart thing to see if the destination you are planning to travel to has any warnings about it from the United States Government. Fortunately, the United States State Department keeps a list of countries that they have put out travel warnings for.

Now, it's important to remember that not all travel warnings are the same. In fact, the U.S. State Department has different levels of travel advisories that they release.

U.S. State Department Travel Advisory Levels

Level 1 Travel Advisory's are the lowest level. They mean "Exercise Normal Precautions". In other words, be aware of your surroundings, make smart decisions, and be on guard like you would anywhere else.

Level 2 Travel Advisory means "Exercise Increased Caution". Be hyper aware to risks of safety and security. You may not want to travel alone. You may not want to wear flashy jewelry.

Level 3 Travel Advisory means "Reconsider Travel". These are probably destinations you don't want to travel to due to the serious risks to safety and security. If you do travel to these destinations, you should stay in the tourist areas.

Level 4 Travel Advisory means "Do Not Travel. Pretty simple here, as a Level 4 means you are pretty much putting your life at risk if you travel to these areas. Countries that are placed on Level 4 are put there for many factors, but many are due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, war, kidnapping risks. You are actually encouraged to write a will and leave DNA samples before leaving.

Below are the nations the United States warns Texans, and all U.S. citizens not to travel to. For more information, visit the U.S. State Department's website.
