It’s a story that’s both heartbreaking and a reminder of real power of nature: A tornado that tore through Brazoria County on Saturday, December 28, claimed the life of 46-year-old Jamie Brown and left multiple families without homes or posessions.

Jamie was in her modular home in Alvin, Texas, making lunch when the EF-2 tornado struck. According to KHOU, the storm lifted the house over 100 feet, eventually throwing it to the ground where it was obliterated. Jamie’s wife, Stafnie Brown, shared the devastating details. “I tried to do CPR, but she was already gone,” she said. “I think she got crumpled by stuff in the house.”

The Browns had moved to the property in August to care for Stafnie’s mother. Over the years, their home had withstood Texas hurricanes, but this storm proved too much. Stafnie described Jamie as a kind and loving soul: “I still think I’m going to wake up in the middle of the night, and she’s there. Or is she going to come walking through the door?--But it’s not going to happen.”

The tornado didn’t stop with the Browns’ home. The main house on the property, where Erica Ackerman, her husband Billy, and their two children lived, was also destroyed. They, along with four others, have been left homeless. “We’ve completely lost everything, including a dear family member,” Erica wrote on a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $7,000 to help the displaced families rebuild.

This tragic storm was part of a severe weather outbreak not just in the Lone Star state, but across the Deep South, which claimed at least three additional lives, including an 8-year-old girl in Mississippi. As Brazoria County begins to recover, this story serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly life can change and the power of Mother Nature.
