Shreveport Joins National Trend: Skipping Easter to Save Money
Easter Day is America's fourth favorite holiday. In 2024, Americans spent an approximate massive $22.4 billion on Easter, a big number but nowhere near the nearly $1 trillion we spent on Christmas.
In 2025, Shreveport is projected to be joining most of the country in cutting back our spending on a holiday we already spend less on compared to the others, but how and why are so many cutting back on the holiday?
Shreveport Join America As We Skip "Egg" Day
A new survey of Americans shows that it's not just in Shreveport that people are rethinking how much forking over to the holiday bunny. Americans from the bayous of Louisiana to the mountains of Colorado are all asking themselves how much they're willing to spend.
The survey asked Americans a lot of questions about their finances, their holiday spending, and how hot topics like inflation and tariffs are expected to change our holiday habits.Life has gotten expensive over the last few years thanks to inflation, but the topic of tariffs has also changed how people are looking at the economy.
Despite tariffs being a trending topic across social media for weeks now, inflation is seen as a bigger problem for our Easter spending. Nearly half of Americans believe that inflation will be a reason they spend less this Easter, while only about 2 out of 5 believe the turmoil around tariffs will be a big reason why they don't spend as much.
Easter Bunny Needs Discount Eggs
Though some might still do Easter with religious services or more frugal celebrations, one celebration almost half of Shreveport will be skipping out on is egg dyeing. Why? Eggs are still too expensive.
Late in 2024 a bird flu outbreak caused egg prices to start creeping up as the outbreak caused issues for farmers across the country. Now in April of 2025 eggs have reached an all-time record high of $6.23 a dozen, this is the national average so eggs may be more or less expensive depending on where you shop.
Despite Economic Hardships, Easter Might Look The Same
The National Retail Federation collects retail and sales data all year and can tell us how much we have spent on holidays, and they also predict how much we'll spend on each holiday.
Earlier in April the NRF put out their predictions for how much America will spend on the holiday, and it seems to disagree with what those Americans surveyed will be doing this easter.
In 2025 the NRF expects America to spend a total of $23.6 billion on Easter. Somehow with half of us skipping the eggs this easter, we're still expected to spend a billion dollars more than last year on the holiday.
