Want a chicken fried steak that takes up an entire serving tray? Check this massive thing out over in Houston.

Last weekend I made a little road trip over to Houston to watch my Dallas Mavericks take on the Houston Rockets. Sadly, my Mavericks lost. While I was in Houston, I decided to look up food challenges and found Hickory Hollow's chicken fried steak 'challenge'.

Hickory Hollow's Massive Chicken Fried Steak

So I arrived at the restaurant and asked to do the challenge and they told me they no longer do it. Back in the day, they had a wall of fame if you finished it and also an option to buy a $10 t-shirt upon completion of your meal. They still offer the chicken fried steak, but all the cool stuff is no longer there. I figured I might as well see if I still have it in the food challenge game.

What Do You Have to Eat in the Hickory Hollow 'Challenge'?

You have to order their large chicken fried steak that they call 'The Rancher' and they say it's the size of a saddle blanket. It comes with your choice of two sides. Here is what you can pick off their menu.

  • Fries
  • Grilled fresh Zucchini
  • Hot Tots (jalapeno potato puffs)
  • Side Salad ("small bowl" single serving)
  • Pinto Beans
  • Potato Salad
  • Cole Slaw
  • Fried Okra
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Kernel Corn
  • Southern Green Beans
  • Mac 'n' Cheese
  • Fried Onion Rings
  • Fried Zucchini

The meal in total costs $19 for the large chicken fried steak. They also offer two other sizes if you think you can't do the big one.
