A 2nd-grade student in Borger, Texas was involved in a terrible freak accident in the drop-off line at Gateway Elementary School last Friday, resulting in their tragic death.

According to police, the young student exited their guardian's vehicle around 8 a.m. on January 24, 2025, when their coat became caught in the car door as the vehicle drove away.

The incident occurred so quickly that the school administration who immediately attempted to intervene could not stop it from happening.

School staff attempted to save the child, who, unfortunately, died from their injuries at the hospital.

CBS News reported a statement released by the Borger Police Department:

"Our hearts go out to all those affected by this horrible accident as they navigate this devastating loss," the BPD said. "The entire community grieves alongside them. At this time, we ask for understanding, patience, and compassion for all those affected. Please join us in keeping the family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time."

Here are a few helpful tips for school drop-off safety:

1. Stay alert and avoid distractions like your phone or eating. Be sure to focus on the road and your surroundings.

2. Follow the speed limit, drive slowly, and pay attention to reduced speed limit signs.

3. Use designated drop-off areas and avoid dropping children off in unauthorized areas.

4. Be patient and expect delays. Don't rush. Everyone's priority is safety.

5. Avoid double parking and any parking that could create an unsafe situation for pedestrians.

6. Always yield to pedestrians at the crosswalks. Be aware that some children and parents may neglect to use them.
