Summer is quickly approaching, along with those sweltering days, when you step outside and feel like you're opening an oven you forgot to turn off.

And once again, the same question rides up with the heat:

Where. Are. The. Pools.

For a city that regularly hits triple digits before lunchtime, it's wild that we have zero places for children to go swimming. Sure, some of us have a buddy with a backyard oasis. A few people will sneak into apartment complex pools. Some people will make it through the summer with a smile on their face...

But, for everyone else? It's cruddy kiddie pools, sprinklers, the water hose, or the beer cooler at the gas station...

We’re told public pools are too expensive to run. Maintenance, staffing, insurance, it all adds up. Fair enough.

But also… have you seen what is getting funded around here?

Because somehow, there’s always enough money floating around for buying up every affordable house in town and turning it into a rental priced like it comes with beachfront access. We may not have public pools, but we do have premium rent with a lovely view of dust. Great...thanks.

And look, nobody’s asking for a Vegas resort. We’re not demanding cabanas and DJs. We just want a place where kids can cannonball, parents can sit in the shade, and everyone can cool off. That's it. It's that simple.

Nearby cities have it figured out.

Like...uhh...all of them...

Growing up in the 90s, there was no shortage of public pools in Lubbock. We had so many to choose from. I just don't understand.

When it’s 105 degrees and climbing, a public pool isn’t a luxury; it’s survival. And right now, Lubbock is out here fighting summer with a garden hose and a dream.
