Lubbock Citibus Strikes and Kills 75-Year-Old Female Pedestrian
Tuesday morning, December 11th, 2024, around 7:09 am, 75-year-old Beatriz De Los Santos was struck and killed by a Lubbock Citibus in the area of Clovis Road and Avenue U.
According to police, 69-year-old Vernon Heil was driving the bus at the time of the tragic incident. The bus was headed south in the 200 block of North Avenue U, and allegedly struck De Los Santos while crossing the railroad tracks.
De Los Santos was rushed to the University Medical Center by EMS. Sadly, she passed away later that day due to the nature of her injuries.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the state of Texas has the second-highest pedestrian death rate in the nation, with 817 pedestrian deaths in 2021 alone. California is just slightly more at 1,108 pedestrian deaths in 2021.
The NHTSA recommends pedestrians use extra caution when walking at night, walking on the weekends after dark, and walking on an open road in an urban setting. Data collected among pedestrian deaths showed that walking in those places without using extra caution is the most common way to fall victim to a deadly accident.
