Lubbock, Here’s What To Do If You Accidentally Hit a Stray Animal
When I was 16 years old, I accidentally hit a dog with my car.
It was genuinely one of the worst experiences of my entire life, and it has stuck with me.
I was horrified, completely freaked out, and I had NO idea what I was even supposed to do.
This was before I had a cell phone, so I couldn't exactly Google, "OH MY GOD I HIT A DOG WHAT DO I DO NOW!?"
I totally panicked.
Pulled over all willy-nilly in traffic on Slide Road.
Got out of my car and started screaming and being 100% dramatic about the whole thing.
I can't believe I didn't make things worse.
Luckily, the dog scampered away. I never found out what happened to it, but I've always hoped it got a second chance at life.
Honestly, I still think about that dog from time to time. I hope he's doing okay. He'd be approximately 150 in dog years by now...but a girl can dream.
What Should You Actually Do?
If you accidentally hit a dog or cat in Lubbock, here's what you need to know:
1. Pull over safely - Don't make a dangerous situation worse. Pull off the road and make sure you are in a safe place before you stop and check out the situation.
2. Check on the animal if it's safe - Injured animals may try to bite you out of fear. Don't try to handle it if you're unsure of your safety.

3. Call Lubbock Animal Services - Their field operations number is 806-775-3357. If there is an immediate emergency, call 911.
4. Report where it occurred - Whether the animal runs away or not, be sure you provide a description of where it happened and the direction you were traveling.
5. Document the incident - Take pictures of any damage. You might need them later for your insurance company.
Guys, I hope you NEVER need this information.
And to that dog from my teenage years: I really hope you made it home safely.
