Tornados for so many people seem like a thing of the past.

In 1970 26 people died when a tornado tore through the city of Lubbock. In addition to the lives lost the destruction resulted in the costliest damage ever recorded. It basically resulted in Lubbock being scarred and eventually reshaped into the place we know today.

So could Lubbock be hit with another tornado? The answer is, of course. There is absolutely nothing that can make this or any other town tornado-proof. The problem lies in the feeling that we've already paid the price, or that the odds of tornados hitting the same place are too high. Let's also add that we've all experienced so many tornado warnings and watches that it doesn't seem like they're ever a "real" threat.

I live in one of the places where the tornado struck. It wasn't until the last couple of months that the final tornado ruins were brought down for a new housing addition. I was reminded every day when I went to work or the store that these things are real, they do happen, and they could happen anytime. I have very mixed emotions about this sad reminder and warning of what could happen being bulldozed over.

Tornado "season" is generally April to June, but it's always a good idea to have an emergency plan for your family. Trust me, I know how dorky it feels to say, "Alright family it's time to discuss our emergency plan" but at the end of the day we all know where we're going to meet if things go sideways.  It's so very important to remember that this is one of those times that you are "on your own" and that you must recognize the danger and take the available precautions.

The average person has a 1 in about 5.7 million chance of being killed by a tornado, but your odds go way up with living in tornado alley. Stay aware and be prepared because tornados can actually happen any time certain weather conditions exist.
