Since 1937, August's Pies have been more than just a dessert; they’ve been a piece of Lubbock’s history. Known for their classic flavors and old-fashioned charm, the pies nearly disappeared from shelves permanently until a dedicated effort brought them back.

The History of August's Pies in Lubbock

August Moeller knew that people loved his fried pies and began selling them way back in 1937. There is some debate about whether the pies were first sold in Lubbock or Wichita Falls, but we do know that August's Pies were handmade here in Lubbock at 4820 Avenue Q for many years.

In the 1970s, production of August's Pies was taken over by... August. But most people knew him as Tim Moeller, August's son, who had kept the pies made the old-fashioned way until his retirement. Tim passed away in 2022 and is still remembered fondly by many.

Here is a very sweet video made by Texas Country Reporter, in which you can see the Avenue Q facility in operation and hear from Tim himself. It may make you a little sad, like me, when you see they once had a Cherry Lime flavor (I would love to go back in time to taste it!).

The Efforts That Saved August Pies from Fading Away

When Tim retired, production of August's Pies ceased. Luckily, another well-beloved brand in our community stepped up to keep August's Pies from going extinct- United Supermarkets.

From a 2020 press release from United:

When we learned August Pies had ceased operations, we moved quickly to ensure the legendary brand would continue to be available for our guests,” said Sidney Hopper, president of The United Family. “We feel the brand and quality of August Pies aligns well with our mission to offer great local products

Of course, it took a little while to secure the rights to the recipes and the brand August's Pies, so for a while, there was no getting your hands on one. However, thanks to United's dedication, you can still purchase an August's Fried pie at their stores (they are usually right by the register).

United continues to produce and sell pies in apple, pineapple, cherry, apricot (the best in my opinion), peach, creamy lemon, chocolate, and coconut. But consider this my petition to bring back Cherry Lime.
