Two things have caught my attention this week and deeply disturb me. One: the ruling that upskirt photos are now legally protected as free speech. And two: the offensive and sexist display by Texas Tech's Phi Delta Theta fraternity that made light of rape.

At the risk of sounding old-fashioned, I believe the objectification of females all around us is the main reason for the downward spiral.

How many thousands of images are we all faced with each day of airbrushed near nudity as the norm? We have become so numb to it.

The message sent out to young men and women, still forming values and opinions, is that females want (deserve?) to be treated as sex objects. That it's alright to use them and degrade them. That a female won't be considered for relationships or job opportunities unless she is wearing thigh high boots and booty shorts.

Hats off to Texas Tech University for stepping up and starting an investigation into fraternities and sororities and their practices. In addition to this, I propose education which will lead to respectful perspectives toward the opposite sex and prevention of future events such as the ones that put such a negative spotlight on Lubbock this week.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but as they say, prevention is part of the cure.
