I'm in the process of moving to a new home, and it's easy to forget just how crazy it gets and just how much you have to do when you're moving.

You start packing and looking for a place, but you forget there are a lot of little things you need to do as well.

Changing Your Address

The first thing to check off your list is changing your address. There may be a lot of places you'll need to do this. Places like the U.S. Postal Service (they have a form), driver's license IPS, social security, banks, voter registration, credit card billing, PayPal, your place of employment, insurance companies, doctors, school, friends and family, subscriptions and so much more.

Cancel Services

After all that, you may have to cancel or transfer all your services. This includes cable, phones, internet, water/electric, gas, trash, pest control and any other services you might need. Some places let you do it as early as you want, but in others may require 30 days or more notice. For example, when I did my Vivant and utilities through Lubbock, it had to be right at 30 days.

Now that the hard stuff is out of the way, it's time for all the "fun stuff."

To keep organized, make sure you keep all your important paperwork and documents in one easy box to find because that is stuff you can't lose. You'll have to turn in all your keys, warranties and other things to the new owners, so you don't want to misplace those.

Packing

When it comes to moving, make sure you don't make the boxes too heavy. That's what I tend to do sometimes and it makes moving harder. Purge as much stuff as you can. If you haven't used it in a year, you probably don't need it. Reserve your movers or a truck as soon as you can. I'm using Hart Moving & Storage Inc. and they've been great.

Moving Day

On moving day, you probably want to make sure if you have kids or pets that they're somewhere else and you have some help. You may want to tip your movers if you have them, so have a little extra cash on-hand.

If you're renting an apartment or home, once everything is moved out make sure you have a day or two extra to do some cleaning. That can help you get your deposit back as long as your deposit is refundable. Sometimes, they aren't. All that info will be in your rental agreement, so check that or make sure speak with your landlord to clarify everything. You definitely don't want a fee or have to pay another month's rent if you don't get out in time.

When you're officially done, make sure you run the garbage disposal and take out all the trash and lock all the doors.

You did it. Congrats! Now it's time to enjoy your new place.

If you have any other useful tips to make the moving process a little easier, let me know. I'm in the process right now and would love to hear them.
