The new MTV show Skins has been garnering some unflattering attention, mainly from the Parents Television Council. But I think there are quite a few reasons to not listen to their over hyped criticism.

1) It's just a TV show.

2) It's on cable, which is a pay service that you have to ask for, so if observant parents didn't want their teens to watch it they could block the show.

3) It's on after 10 pm so for the parents-see above.

4) It comes with a TV-MA rating, so again-see above.

Essentially what I'm saying is that for involved parents this show is no big deal.  If they can talk to their kids openly about the subject matter in the show then what's the big deal.  If they can't, then maybe this show will help.  There are as many road blocks to teens seeing this show as there are for teens to watch porn on the internet.  If the Parents Television Council would spend as much time and energy helping to spur honest discussion between parents and teens as they do just trying to keep us from watching a show they disagree with, then maybe this show wouldn't be necessary in today's world.  But trust me on this, if all you do is try to hide the truth and the real world from your kids, they'll find out about it from somebody else and you have no idea who that may be.  I would rather my kids learn about the good and the bad in the world from me and not just figure it out between their friends at school.
