Hear ye, hear ye! Lubbock will soon get our very own location of Earl of Sandwich in southwest Lubbock, according to our friends at Lubbock in the Loop.

The eatery is tentatively set to open as early as January 2021 at 11824 Indiana Ave., Suite 100.

Earl of Sandwich might sound silly or pretentious, but the name actually makes a lot of sense. The Earl of Sandwich is a real noble title in England that still exists today, and that lineage is responsible for sandwiches as we know them.

In the late 18th century, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, invented this delicious and practical food so he could gamble at the card table longer. Now, it's a great solution for everyone from packed lunches to eating in a rush during your lunchtime commute.

The restaurant Earl of Sandwich is a franchised chain featuring sandwiches, wraps, salads, and soups. They even serve breakfast items.

The Original 1792, named after the year Montagu invented the sandwich, is a combination of roast beef, cheddar, and horseradish. Yum. I happen to be on a diet as of my writing this, so every item pictured on their website is making my mouth water, but I think the Hawaiian BBQ might have to be my first pick once the restaurant is open. Yes, I'm one of those people that think pineapple is just as good savory as it is sweet.

Opening a franchise during a pandemic may be a gamble, but John Montagu became a legend for gambling. He also lived a very long and storied life, so the name is certainly auspicious.
