Dax Shepard will be taking a break from showcasing his adorable marriage to Kristen Bell in fridge commercials to helm a Scooby-Doo animated movie. He recently completed his CHiPs big-screen adaptation, which he directed and also starred in alongside Michael Peña, and it looks like he’s caught the classic-TV-show-to-movie bug.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shepard is teaming up with Warners Animation Group for the project, on which he’ll be collaborating with screenwriter Matt Lieberman. Warners wants to have Shepard co-direct with Emmy-nominated Tony Cervone, a veteran of the animation industry who produced the Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated revival of the animated series from 2010-2013. Because animated movies take so long to make, co-directing happens often, and since this is Shepard’s first animated directing effort, it’ll be a good thing to have someone on the team who’s been in the industry as long as Cervone has.

Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, who produced the two live-action Scooby-Doo outings (2002’s Scooby-Doo and 2004’s Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed) are both producing the project, and Warners is looking at a September 21, 2018 release date. Now, reports aren’t saying as much, but Cervone’s involvement and the release date line up: if Warner Bros. hasn’t modified their plans, it looks like Shepard has signed on to direct S.C.O.O.B., the first in what Hanna-Barbera hopes will jump-start its own cinematic universe.
