BTS Make ‘Friends’ on ‘Ellen,’ Answer Dating and Language Questions
BTS made their hotly anticipated debut on Ellen Monday (November 27) following a promo-packed week in Los Angeles, including a history-making performance at the 2017 American Music Awards.
Sitting down with Ellen DeGeneres, the K-pop group dished on the surprising way lead member RM learned English, the importance of their ARMY (plus dating rumors) and why their music has crossed so many boundaries.
"My English teacher was a sitcom, Friends," RM explained when DeGeneres asked how he learned the language. "Back in the day, when I was, like, 15 or 14, it was like a syndrome for all the Korean parents to make their kids watch Friends. I thought I was kind of like a victim at that time, but right now, I'm the lucky one."
"My mother bought me all the seasons, all 10 DVDs, and first I watched them with the Korean subtitles, then the English subtitles, then [none]," he continued, impressing the talk show host.
DeGeneres also asked about the various topics BTS write about, including mental health and other issues, and why the band feels that their music transcends language barriers.
"I think we...can all share in the same message and I think that's why our songs appeal to people who speak Korean and people who don't speak Korean," Suga answered through a translator.
Meanwhile, the group erupted into laughter and awkward smiles when asked if any of them had ever "hooked up with an ARMY," to which V quipped, "Not... not... NO!"
