Afroman Punches Woman Onstage, Charged With Assault [VIDEO]
About 15 years ago, a rapper named Afroman released "Because I Got High." The tongue-in-cheek song was considered a novelty record by most, but managed to make some considerable noise, peaking at No. 25 on the Billboard Top 40 charts in 2001 and becoming a top five hit overseas, before the rapper faded into obscurity. He was even nominated for a Grammy Award for the track. Well, many would suspect that he's still getting high on something after taking a look at this shocking video.
Afroman, whose real name is Joseph Foreman, was arrested Tuesday night (Feb. 17) in Biloxi, Miss. after punching a woman in the face during a performance at local venue Kress Live. The entertainer was performing at the venue's Fat Tuesday event, which took place following Biloxi's Mardi Gras Parade.
During his set, Afroman was playing the blues on the guitar when a female concert-goer appeared onstage. With a drink in hand, she got close to the former rapper, seemingly about to dance beside him, and he suddenly turned around and hit her with a vicious blow.
The woman was able to make a citizen's arrest and later filed an affidavit against Afroman, who was arrested and charged with simple misdemeanor assault. The California native bailed himself out with $330 cash. According to the city's police chief, he gave the authorities "no problem whatsoever.
According to WLOX 13, Kress Live owner Chase Taylor stopped the performance once the attack occurred. "Afroman was about five songs into his set when the incident occurred," Taylor said. "We pulled the plug on him, and security met him at the bottom of the stage to escort him outside, where he was taken into custody."
The musician's rep states that he was caught off guard by the woman and the punch was a result of reacting to his personal space being violated. "This was a completely involuntary reflex reaction to people infringing on his stage space," his rep said in a statement to Billboard. "It was uncharacteristic behavior that was initiated by outside uncontrolled forces."
He may not be a notable name on the music scene these days, but Afroman continues to record at a steady pace, last releasing Because I Got High (Positive Remix) in 2014.
