Zendaya’s ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Character Name Revealed
After months of speculation, we finally have confirmation of the name of the character Zendaya will portray in the forthcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.
As previously rumored, the pop star and Disney actress will play a character named Michelle in the "John Hughes-esque" movie. The news was confirmed late Saturday (July 23) night during Entertainment Weekly's San Diego Comic Con interview with director Jon Watts.
Deadline first announced back in March that Zendaya had been added to the cast of Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Homecoming alongside Tom Holland, who will play Peter Parker/Spiderman in the reboot and who also played the web-slinger in a cameo in Captain America: Civil War this year.
Speaking to YouTube channel Flicks and the City at Comic Con, the "Replay" singer described the experience working on the film as "one of the coolest things I think I've ever done in my entire life."
As for the character, it's widely rumored that Zendaya's role will be based off lawyer Michele Gonzales from the Spider-Man comics.
However, Michele traditionally appears in the comic series when she and Peter — who are both occasional roommates and friends with benefits — are adults, so it's unclear if Zendaya's portrayal will simply be a younger, platonic version of the character, or someone completely new who just so happens to share the same name, since Homecoming will take place during Peter's high school years.
Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters July 7, 2017.
