I love these fake "process server" collection calls.

These people love to use fear to intimidate you into calling them back and giving them all kinds of information and money that they are not entitled to. Even better, they love to spoof phone numbers. (Spoofing is where they use what appears to be someone else's phone number, and yes, it is legal, though it shouldn't be.)

As someone who worked in the legal profession for several years, I know that NO process server is EVER going to call to warn you that they are coming, same goes for law enforcement. What a pile of garbage. Also, process servers have to be registered in the State of Texas, and no such person with this name is one in Texas.

Here's the transcript from the phone call I got. See if you can spot the problems:

"This message is solely intended for *Name Redacted*. Hi. My name is Jessica Sharp, and I'm an independent process server out of Lubbock County. We've been trying to serve you with some legal documents that are attached to your name and social security number. I'll be making several attempts to gain your signature at your current residence or place of employment tomorrow, October 24th between the hours of 3 and 5 p.m. If I'm unable to reach you at either of these locations this will be documented as a direct refusal to sign, and you will miss your court date. If you have any further questions or concerns prior to my arrival tomorrow you may contact the filing parties office, which is handling your case directly at ***-***-****,  refer to your case number C. As in Charlie V as in Victor **** for *NAME REDACTED* you have been notified and I will be out tomorrow October 24th between the hours of 3 and 5 p.m.”

They couldn't even say the name of Lubbock County right, so that is sure sign number 1. Number 2: You will miss your court date? Whatever! I can look up current filings at the courthouse. I'm not on anything. Stupid people. The girl sounded like a 23-year-old addicted to something nasty. And no, no one showed up at my home or here at the radio station. Once again, trying to use fear and fake legal intimidation to get your hard-earned money.

Folks, follow the standard rules:

  1. If you don't recognize the caller, don't answer
  2. If it smells like a dog turd and looks like a dog turd, it is probably a dog turd
  3. DON'T EVER GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY INFORMATION OR MONEY -- JUST HANG UP

Don't be a victim!
