It took director Bryan Bertino six years to deliver a follow-up to his directorial debut, 2008’s terrifying instant horror classic The Strangers. Although most people didn’t check out his second film, the surprisingly decent found footage flick Mockingbird (it’s on Netflix, FYI), perhaps more will be drawn to The Monster. The first trailer for Bertino’s latest has arrived online, teasing a simple horror film in the vein of Cujo.

Only that’s not a huge, rabid dog attacking Zoe Kazan’s character; it’s an actual monster, as the title suggests. The titular creature is tantalizingly teased in the new trailer for The Monster, which stars Kazan and Ella Ballentine as a mom and daughter stuck out in the middle of nowhere after they hit…something…and their car breaks down. That something proceeds to terrorize them, as scary somethings tend to do.

The Monster is available to rent exclusively on DirecTV starting today, giving subscribers a chance to check out Bertino’s new horror thriller a month before it hits theaters. Here’s the official synopsis:

Acclaimed horror filmmaker Bryan Bertino (The Strangers) directs this suspenseful and scary new film, in which a divorced mother (Zoe Kazan) and her headstrong daughter must make an emergency late night road trip to see the girl’s father.  As they drive through deserted country roads on a stormy night, they suddenly have a startling collision that leaves them shaken but not seriously hurt.  Their car, however, is dead, and as they try in vain to get help, they come to realize they are not alone on these desolate backroads - a terrifying evil is lurking in the surrounding woods, intent on never letting them leave…

The Monster also stars Scott Speedman (who previously appeared in Bertino’s The Strangers) and arrives in theaters and VOD on November 11.
