Since May 3, there has been a string of small fires set inside of Texas Tech's Weymouth Hall. None of the fires have caused major damages, but now the Texas Tech University Fire Marshal’s Office is out to find the culprit.

On May 3, a Texas Tech Police Officer was called to Weymouth Hall to inspect damage done to the decor outside of a door on the fifth floor of the building. The decor hung on the outside of the door, and when it was burned it left the door with minor damage. This is suspected to have happened between 2 and 10 p.m. earlier that day.

A second report was made that day by a Community Adviser for the dorm in regards to a partially destroyed poster that hung in the hallway of the fourth floor.

The next day, May 4, the Fire Marshall conducted a floor by floor inspection of the building. They found two dorms on the third floor with damage that had yet to be reported. Texas Tech Police interviewed all occupants and the damage happened appropriately a week prior to the other arson.

While there are no injuries, setting fire to to property inside a campus building with intent to cause damage to the property, regardless of whether the fire continues after ignition, is a second degree felony punishable by imprisonment in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for any term of not more than 20 years or less than two years, and a fine of at most $10,000.

If anyone has any information about this arson or any responsible parties, they can contact the Texas Tech Police Department at 806-743-2000 or Crime Line at 806-741-1000.
