Texas Herbal Beverage Company Issues Recall- Because Milk & Viagra?

New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee (yes, 'tradisional', its Indonesian for traditional)  has issued a recall because of an undeclared milk ingredient (a major allergen for some) and because:

FDA laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of desmethyl carbodenafil.  Desmethyl carbodenafil is structurally similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, an FDA-approved prescription drug for erectile dysfunction (ED).

In essence, this "herbal supplement" contains a chemical that can have the same effects and side effects of Viagra. While it was marketed as a "male enhancement" consumers deserve to know that this drink could have adverse reactions with other drugs they are taking and can dangerously lower blood pressure. According to The Consumerist, "There have been no reported illnesses or injuries from the products, but a similar male enhancement instant coffee product recalled in May has been linked to at least one death".

Herbs can be a wonderful natural supplement to your diet, but I highly encourage you to look up drug interactions if you are taking anything at all. There's a great list here, and of course, you should bring up any herbal supplements you are taking or plan to take with your doctor.
