A memorial service and reception honoring the life of Spike Dykes will be held Thursday, April 13 in Lubbock.

Dykes is a former Texas Tech Football head coach who helped guide the Red Raiders from the Southwest Conference into the Big 12 Conference. He passed away Monday (April 10) at the age of 79.

Thursday afternoon, a memorial service will be held in Lubbock at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church at 1411 Broadway.

Then, at 3 p.m., a reception honoring the life of Spike Dykes will be held at the United Supermarkets Arena on the Texas Tech campus.

The United Supermarkets Arena will also serve as over-flow seating for the memorial service at First United Methodist Church since the service will be broadcast on the video boards in the arena. In addition, the memorial service at First United Methodist Church will be broadcast, for free, online at TexasTech.TV.

According to Texas Tech Athletics, the northwest and southwest entrances to United Supermarkets Arena (USA) will open Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. for fans wishing to watch the 2 p.m. memorial service. Free parking will be available in the commuter lots located north and west of the USA.

The 79-year-old Dykes was the head coach for Texas Tech Football for 13 seasons, through 1999. He compiled a record of 82-67-1 with six bowl game appearances.

Dykes' coaching accomplishments include three Southwest Conference Coach of the Year awards and the Big 12 Coach of the Year award in 1996, the first season of the Big 12 Conference.

According to Texas Tech Athletics, in lieu of flowers, the Dykes family requests donations be made to the Spike Dykes Memorial Scholarship Endowment benefiting Texas Tech football student-athlete scholarships.
