One of the marvels of the modern age and a legend that may rightfully claim a Texas origin: The Schlotzky Sandwich Bun!

A compelling reasons for my recent re-location back to my home state of Texas is the great food franchises found only (or mostly) in the Lone Star State: Whataburger, Taco Cabana, Rudy's and Schlotzky's to name a few.

Today, I got my Schlotz Fix at the Indiana Ave. location. Inside, the place was a mess. It wasn't during the lunch rush, actually more like 2:15 p.m. or so. While there were many tables available, not a single one was clean.

Cleanliness aside, the food met my every anticipation. I had the regular original on dark rye, while my son had the regular original on jalapeno bread.

Schlotzky's has its origin in Austin back in '71, and I remember eating at a Northside San Antonio establishment quite often as a kid.

The restaurant franchise is famous for the uniqueness of its flat, circular bun/bread which is quite airy and based on a Muffuletta recipe.

If you've never had it, it really is quite unique. This isn't your typical dagwood-style mega decker sandwich; cheese and meat aren't really piled on high. There is always a wealth of veggies on each sandwich; standards like lettuce, tomato and onion with the added color of black olives.

Even though I like meat piled high on sandwiches, the Schlotzky never disappoints.

Score: Overall, I gave it a B- rating. Clean up the surroundings, and that jumps up to an A.
