A few months ago, we cautiously reported on some new rumors that had the previously discarded Planet Hulk storyline finding its way into Thor: Ragnarok. According to the rumors, the newest film starring everyone’s favorite God of Thunder would include a scene where Thor and the Hulk both find themselves competing in a galactic arena; they then join forces to seek out a weapon Thor needs to defend Asgard. While we had our doubts — the Hollywood rumor game is a fickle beast — this rumor made enough sense that it seemed like a good time to bring it up.

It turns out our trust was well-placed. Today, in advance of this evening’s Comic-Con International Marvel Studios panel with Kevin Feige, Marvel Digital Media Director Ryan Penagos took to Twitter to share a first look at Hulk’s gladiator armor. Those in the know from the comic books will agree that it looks very familiar indeed.

From a comic book fan perspective, the opportunity to see Thor and Hulk throw down in space — call it The Avengers, Round 2 — should make Thor: Ragnarok a very promising film even within a franchise known for very promising films. My only concern would be whether this moment will fit well within the Thor: Ragnarok script or if there was some edict to move elements of Planet Hulk into another property. While Marvel Studios has done an excellent job balancing big personalities and big characters in their movies thus far, outside of a few comedic beats, the films have not devoted much time to Bruce Banner and Thor. It will be interesting to see if the movie wants to form a true alliance between the two or if the prospect of Gladiator Hulk was just too good to pass up on.

In addition to Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, Thor: Ragnarok will bring back Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston to the franchise and add newcomers Cate Blanchett (Hela), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Jeff Goldblum (Grandmaster), and Karl Urban (Skurge). The film is set to be released on November 3, 2017.
